From a terrace in Marrakech in January, the view often says it all: blue sky, orange trees in fruit, and the whole line of the High Atlas white with snow. Many agencies keep Morocco for spring and autumn. Yet winter gives groups bright days, calmer sites and, outside the holidays, rooms that are much easier to find.
How cold is Morocco in winter, region by region?
It depends entirely on where the group sleeps.
Marrakech and the imperial cities. Sunny days that can pass 18 °C in the afternoon, and cold nights, sometimes close to freezing in Fes and Meknes. Visits are pleasant; evenings are spent indoors.
The Atlantic coast. The mildest region, Agadir first. Too cool for swimming for most people, ideal for walking and golf.
The mountains. Snow covers the peaks and can reach the villages of the High Atlas. The Oukaïmeden ski area, in the mountains near Marrakech, opens when the snow allows.
The desert. Clear, gentle days and very cold nights: the camp needs thick blankets, and participants need real warm clothes. What the desert involves for a group is covered in Taking a group into the Sahara.

Which weeks fill up first?
- Christmas and New Year. The busiest fortnight of the year in Marrakech and the desert camps. Many hotels ask for a minimum stay and include a compulsory gala dinner on 31 December. For a group, these dates are held months ahead.
- January, after the first week. The quietest weeks of the season: wide availability, calm sites, attentive teams. A very good window for a seminar or an incentive.
- February. School holidays return in several European markets, and in 2027 the month of fasting starts in February too. What it changes for a group is covered in Why travel to Morocco in March?
What changes on the ground?
Three things: light, heat and roads. Days last a little over ten hours, so road legs start early and visits end around sunset. Traditional houses keep the cool well, which is a quality in summer and a question in winter: for riads, check that every room is heated. And in the mountains, a snowfall can close a pass for a few hours, which is why a winter circuit keeps some flexibility, as described in our article on support during the trip.

Which route suits the season?
A southern loop that alternates cities, coast and mountains: Marrakech, a day in the High Atlas in the snow, then the Atlantic with Essaouira or Agadir. The desert fits in for groups with the right equipment. Our operated itineraries give bases to adapt to the season.
